Write: Walmer [2011-05-20]
Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province, China Dow Corning Corporation, a global leader in silicones and silicon-based technology and innovation kicked off Fascinating Silicone in Life today. The company will offer its popular science education program at its major manufacturing base in Zhangjiagang. The event is also an important component of the Zhangjiagang s National Science Week programs.

Co-organized with Zhangjiagang Education Bureau, Zhangjiagang Free Trade Zone Management Committee, Zhangjiagang Science and Technology Association and China Welfare Institute Children s Palace, this is the second year for Dow Corning to carry out its Fascinating Silicone in Life Science Day program in Zhangjiagang, following a successful debut in 2009. The two-day Science Day allows approximately 200 local students between 10-16 years old from middle schools and primary schools of Zhangjiagang to learn how silicones improve lives, and the importance of environmental protection and innovation.

We are impressed by local students interest in science and their amazing exploring spirit showed in last year s event and very happy to continue Science Day this year in Zhangjiagang where we are developing China s largest integrated silicone manufacturing site, said Brian Austin, Dow Corning Zhangjiagang Plant Director. Through the event, we want to draw strong commitment and support from more people to social and economic development of Zhangjiagang and also help them to understand the importance of environmental protection, innovation and sustainability. We are honored the event has been a highlight of the city s National Science Week programs.

The Zhangjiagang event is the part of the 2010 Dow Corning Science Day series which will be held in other cities later this year. The event was initiated in Shanghai in 2008 and expanded to Zhangjiagang and Songjiang last year.

As a good corporate citizen in China, we believe that each corporation has a responsibility towards the community in which it operates and is dedicated to building even stronger ties with the local communities, said Jeremy Burks, Dow Corning Greater China President. Our role is to help educate, motivate and guide young people in our society. By providing various learning opportunities to the students, we are helping the local community invest in its future.

This year in Zhangjiagang, students will be able to participate in three hands-on silicone-related experiments. In Silicone Rubber and Moisture Cream Making, students will have the chance to make their own moisture cream and silicone rubber under the guidance of Dow Corning volunteers. Both experiments show students not only the magic of silicone and silicon-base technology and products in daily life, but also develop their hands-on capability and exploring spirit.

Among the three experiments, the Mini Solar Car experiment has attracted special attention from the students and teachers. The solar car consists of recycled material for the body and wheels, and a piece of solar panel attached on top. After assembling the solar car, students can also test the results on a race track on site.

The energy generated by the solar panel powers the car and is a great way of showing how sunlight can generate renewable energy, said Brian. The experiment also improves students awareness of recycling wastes and focusing more on environment protection.

We have got a lot of positive feedback from students and teachers participating last year s event. We are pleased to work with Dow Corning to help young people in China deepen their interests on science, inspire their imagination, discover the secrets of science world, and improve their knowledge and skills as well as promote teamwork, said Mr. Huang Dalong, Vice President of Zhangjiagang Education Bureau.
