CALUMET CITY, May 10-Plastics Color Corp. is westward bound, with plans to open a color and additives concentrates plant in California later this year.
Calumet, City, Ill.-based PCC will open a 30,000-square-foot plant in Sun Valley, Calif., this fall, officials said in a May 7 news release. The new plant will employ 14 and will supply color and additive concentrates for the food processing, medical device, medical packaging and pharmaceutical markets.
PCC s black and white concentrates also will be warehoused at the new plant, which will operate two twin-screw extrusion lines. PCC previously had used the building as a warehouse, but it is currently vacant. Officials declined to provide the cost of converting the building into a production site.
We already own the building and have hired the people who will operate this facility, so we ll be able to get up and running quickly, PCC president Doug Borgsdorf said in the release. With the addition of our California plant we hope to become the industry s leading clean compounding company.
PCC sales and marketing vice president Joe Byrne added that the new plant s target markets were selected because PCC s current demand for clean compounding and our market research indicate that this type of production is where our major opportunities are.
We want to be able to service our growing number of west coast customers with the same capabilities currently available from our Asheboro [N.C.] and Calumet City facilities, he said.
Personnel who will work in Sun Valley now are being trained at PCC s Asheboro plant. The new plant will be modeled after the plant within a plant model where high-end specialty materials are produced in a separate area which PCC debuted at Asheboro in 2008. That project was expanded last year, adding 15,000 square feet to the original 7,000.
The plant within a plant concept allows us to apply and evaluate the most advanced manufacturing techniques, including just-in-time production, under actual conditions, Borgsdorf added. It relies on minimal human intervention to ensure the least chance of material contamination.
In addition to Calumet City and Asheboro, PCC operates a plant in Nanjing, China. The firm employs 130 and has annual sales of about $40 million.
