JAKARTA, May 11 - An Indonesia official of the Environment Ministry said Tuesday that there is no compromise in protecting environment and oil-gas companies must adhere to regulations to avoid sanctions.
Ilyas Asaad, a deputy of Environment Minister for Environment Management, told a parliamentary hearing that sanctions consist of administrative and legal ones.
"Of course we could not directly impose legal action to companies that violate environmental law. However, if they ignore administrative sanction, we will impose a tougher one, the legal sanction," said Ilyas, adding that the implementation of Law No. 32/2009 does not aim to frighten oil and gas companies.
Ilyas made the statement to respond question from members of parliament that Indonesia risks to miss oil production target of 300,000 barrel per day (bpd) and could not meet target of 965,000 bpd this year due to the regulation.
Environment Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said that to impose sanctions, the ministry has made a schedule, aiming to control the companies' obedience.
"If we don't make the schedule, the companies will keep asking for extended time," said Hatta.
Hermin Rosita, other deputy of Environment Minister for Environment Management, said that the administrative sanction range from three months to one year.
