Welcome in the valleys for Welsh plastics recycling plant

Write: Sidney [2011-05-20]
April 30-Welsh environment minister, Jane Davidson, visited Blackwood in Gwent to officially open a plastics sorting facility that has benefited from over 1.3m of Welsh Assembly Government funding. The facility will bring up to 30 new jobs to the area and will enable 12,000 tonnes of plastic bottles per year to be turned into flake.

The flake will be supplied as raw material to two plastic manufacturers in the South Wales area, and will help those manufacturers to reduce their spend on materials and their carbon footprint.

Speaking about the opening, the Davidson said: I am delighted to officially open this facility, which has benefited from 1.3m of Welsh Assembly Government money. The plant will transform materials that were formerly sent to landfill into feedstock for Welsh manufacturers.

These sorts of sustainable ventures, with a focus on recycling and reuse, are key to us achieving our ambitions of become a zero waste country by 2050.

The plant is also a wonderful example of how the green economy can help transform the Valleys and communities across Wales by delivering new jobs investment and skills. It shows that changing the way we think about waste doesn t just make a difference to the environment, it can bring real economic benefits too.

Once the plastics sorting plant is operating at full capacity and processing 24, 0000 tonnes of plastic per year, it hopes to supply plastic manufacturers across the UK.
