WASHINGTON, May 5 (Xinhua) -- An explosion occurred Wednesday at the Army's Redstone Arsenal in U.S. state of Alabama, with two severely injured, officials said.
An chemical explosion occurred at around 8:45 a.m. at the Army base at Huntsville, two people were severely injured, local media WAFF quoted a Redstone spokesperson as saying. It previously reported that one was killed and another injured.
Don Webster, Director of Huntsville Emergency Medical Services (HEMSI), said three ambulances and one helicopter are responding to the scene. Huntsville Police and Fire are also responding to help deal with the emergency.
There was an apparent fire after the explosion, but it was put out. All employees in the area have been accounted for.
Redstone Arsenal is located in northern Alabama. It was built in 1941 to produce conventional chemical ammunition for use in World War II. For more than 40 years, Redstone has been the heart of the Army's rocket and missile programs. Today, Redstone is home to the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, the Space and Missile Defense Command.
