TBILISI, April 19-Georgian border guards have detained a Russian-flagged tanker, the "Saratov City," local media reported on Monday.
The vessel was detained on Saturday at the Georgian port of Batimi, according to local TV reports.
The reason for the move is that the tanker was allegedly contaminating the sea.
The case will be reviewed by a Georgian court.
The Georgian side said the tanker poured oil in the water near the coast due to the negligence of the crew.
The owners of the ship will be fined for polluting water if the court confirms that the incident was caused by the technical faults of the tanker and the negligence of the crew.
Experts hope that the incident will not have grave ecological consequences, as the substance that was poured in the water is easily evaporable.
