ADRs inch up as energy and mining shares shine

NEW YORK, March 31 - U.S.-listed shares of overseas companies edged higher on Wednesday, helped by gains in energy and mining companies following a jump in oil and gold prices.

Another bright spot came from the Bank of Ireland (IRE.N), whose U.S.-listed shares surged 9.4 percent to $8.64 after it said it will raise from private sources much of the 2.7 billion euros ($3.6 billion) it needs.

The Bank of New York Mellon index of leading American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) .BKADR inched up 0.09 percent, while the U.S. benchmark S&P 500 index .SPX slipped 0.41 percent.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude oil CLK0 rose above $83 a barrel as the U.S. dollar slipped against the euro. U.S. May crude oil futures ended at the highest level this year -- rising $1.39, or 1.69 percent, to settle at $83.76 per barrel. In turn, the sharply higher oil prices drove the ADRs of BP Plc (BP.N) up 0.6 percent to $57.14.

Shares of Brazil's Petrobras (PBR.N) advanced 1.1 percent to $44.45 while shares of China Petroleum & Chemical Corp (SNP.N) added 0.1 percent to $82.09.

Gold prices hit their highest in more than a week, boosting shares of companies, including South Africa's AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (AU.N), the world's No. 3 gold producer. Its New York-listed shares rose 1.3 percent to $37.89.

The Bank of New York Mellon index of leading Asian ADRs .BKAS was down 0.8 percent.

On the last day of the quarter and Japan's financial year, the benchmark Nikkei .N225 inched down 0.1 percent, or 7.20 points, to close at 11,089.94 after rising as far as 11,147.62, its highest intraday level in about 18 months.

The Bank of New York Mellon index of leading European ADRs .BKEUR was up 0.4 percent. The FTSEurofirst 300 .FTEU3 index of top European shares dipped 0.1 percent to close at 1,078.58 points.

Receipts with the Bank of New York Mellon index of leading Latin American ADRs .BKLA were up 0.7 percent. In Latin America, major benchmarks were mixed, with Brazil's benchmark Bovespa index .BVSP up 0.3 percent.
