Malaysia proposes joint oil exploration with Brunei

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 6 - Malaysia proposed joint oil exploration with Brunei in the maritime border areas, local media reported on Thursday.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak told Malaysian journalists in Brunei on Thursday that the Malaysia's national oil company Petronas would has a role for this join venture but the role would be worked out within the framework of the Malaysia-Brunei Letters of Exchange.

Malaysia and Brunei had signed the Letters of Exchange in Marchthis year, as a boundary agreement for the demarcation of the land and maritime territory between the two countries.

Najib said that Brunei was aware for his proposal, but without given any details for the joint oil exploration project.

The visit was a "big milestone" to bring the bilateral relationship to new heights, said Najib as he concluded his three-day official visit to Brunei.

In addition, Malaysia has proposed other collaborations to Brunei in such sectors as energy, hydro, halal hub, Islamic banking, oil palm cluster and tourism.

Najib also discussed economic matters with Brunei during the visit.

Najib emphasized economic integration between the two countries, saying Brunei's investors could invest in the Malaysian states of Sabah and Johor, while Malaysian companies could invest in Brunei's construction industry, information communication technology and services sector.
