SHANGHAI, May 19 - The 10th International Food and Beverage Exhibition opened amid high hopes in Shanghai Tuesday, with representatives from 1,057 businesses in attendance.
Half of the participants were businesses from overseas, said organizers.
Mariann Fischer Boel, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, who is leading a European Union delegation at the expo, said Sino-EU agricultural trade continues to grow despite the current financial crisis. Many businesses hope to boost exports to China as a result of this fair, she added.
Exported products include olive oil and cheese.
The EU exported 1.66 billion euros worth of farm produce to China last year, accounting for 2.3 percent of its total exports to China, said Boel. The EU's farm products exported to China stood at 500 million euros in 2001.
It is predicted that the EU's agricultural exports to China will increase to two billion euros.
The international food and beverage exhibition, which is being held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, is organized jointly by the France-based Exposium-SIAL Exhibition and the China Commerce Development Center.
Total exhibition space is 40,000 square meters, which is roughly the same amount as last year's trade event, said organizers.
It's estimated 30,000 people will attend the expo which ends Thursday.
