Australia iron ore, oil operations resume after storm

PERTH, March 2 - Mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd/Plc and energy firm Santos Ltd have resumed operations in western Australia after a tropical storm passed the coast, both companies said on Monday.

The weather bureau cancelled flood warnings for much of Western Australia state on Monday after a tropical storm hit landfall on Saturday near the key mining town of Port Hedland and brought 110 mm (4 inches) of rain.

BHP said it had resumed operations at its iron ore export terminal at Port Hedland on Sunday, after shutting the port a day earlier. Its oil and gas operations off western Australian were unaffected by the storm, spokeswoman Kelly Quirke said.

Santos, which suspended production on Friday at its 13,800 barrels per day Mutineer-Exeter oil field off western Australia, said the field resumed production late on Sunday night.

U.S.-based Apache Energy which suspended output from its Stag and Legendre oilfields with a combined capacity of 13,200 bpd on Friday, said it would provide updates on the fields on Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology said on Monday another low pressure system had developed more than 1,000 kilometres off western Australia's northwest coast, and is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 12-18 hours.

Heavy rainfall had also forced Fortescue Metals Group to suspend its iron ore processing operations for about 12 hours over Saturday. The loading of a ship was also halted, although that was set to resume on Sunday.

A Fortescue spokesman said the firm will give further updates on its operations later on Monday.

Rio Tinto said on Monday the storm had no impact on its iron ore operations and it was able to complete repairs to its rail network from flooding last month, with its iron ore trains running again on Sunday.

Other oil and gas operators in the region, including Woodside Petroleum Ltd and Chevron Corp said their operations were unaffected.
