RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 13 -- Brazil's oil and gas giant Petrobras said Tuesday that it will invest 6 billion U.S. dollars in cleaner diesel production.

About 4 billion dollars will be invested in the production of S-50 diesel fuel from 2009 to 2012, said the state-owned company.

The remaining 2 billion dollars will be invested in 2013 in the production of S-10 diesel fuel, which is even less polluting.

The Brazilian government has recently decided to carry out a diesel fuel reform to improve the country's urban air quality.

Instead of using S-500 fuel, which contains 500 ppm (parts per million) of sulfur, all of the buses in the country will start to use S-50 diesel, which has 50 ppm of sulfur.

The government will kick off the reform on Jan. 1 in Rio and Sao Paulo, according to the environment ministry.

Petrobras will begin to supply the new fuel for cities nationwide in May.

By 2012, all of the diesel fuel distributed in Brazil will be the S-50 type. In 2013, the country will start to promote the use of S-10 diesel, which has 10 ppm of sulfur, said the ministry.

The S-50 fuel currently consumed in Rio and Sao Paulo has the same price as the S-500 fuel.
