Venezuela says Amuay refinery ops normal after fire

CARACAS - Venezuela's 640,000 barrel per day Amuay refinery is operating normally after a fire at one of its naphtha units, state oil company PDVSA said in a statement on Sunday.

Refinery sources on Saturday said the fire broke out on December 24 and damaged a furnace at Amuay's Naphtha Unit #2.

The PDVSA statement said the fire occurred on December 23, and that Naphtha Unit #1 was operating at full capacity to compensate for the other "affected" unit.

The company said the incident would not affect supply commitments to domestic or international clients, but did not describe any damage resulting from the fire or say when the unit would be back online.

Naphtha units produce components used in gasoline blending.

Venezuela's refineries have suffered chronic accidents and outages in recent years. A power outage earlier this month briefly took Amuay offline and halted operations at the neighboring 300,000 barrel per day Cardon refinery.
