FACTBOX: Oil shut in after Nigerian militant attacks

Write: Sharnie [2011-05-20]
Oil companies and trading sources have detailed about 550,000 barrels per day (bdp) of Nigerian crude oil shut following the sabotage of oil facilities.

Nigerian militants have launched assaults on two oil installations in the Niger Delta in the heaviest fighting there in two years, militants and security sources said on Tuesday.

Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) has been hit by the most by militant attacks and it extended its force majeure on its Bonny Light export on Friday.

The latest outage volume represents about 18 percent of the West African country's installed output capacity of about 3 million bpd.

Shell's current oil and gas production in Nigeria is about 387,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, a company spokesman said.

Many traders and industry sources said there had been some shut-ins at other oilfields and actual outages might be higher.

The following is a breakdown of production cuts in barrels per day confirmed by oil companies and industry sources.

Field Operator Output Outage Date Shut In Bonny Light Shell (RDSa.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) 175,000 Jul 2008 Bonga Shell 60,000* Jun 2008 Forcados Shell 200,000* Feb 2006 EA Shell 115,000 Feb 2006.
