Consumption and imports of thermoplastics is on the rise in Brazil, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate (EVA). Imports surged by 521,700 tons in the first half this year, rising 60.7% as against the same period of 2007, as per data from the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association.
Brazil consumed 2.4 million tons of thermoplastics from January to June this year, recording an increase of 13.5% over the same period last year. Domestic producers also supplied the domestic market, but recorded a 6.6% decline in production to 2.2 million tons. Output was affected by production stoppages during maintenance shutdowns at national petrochemical plants. Brazilian thermoplastic resin exports also decreased in the accumulated result up until June. They totaled 375,700 tons, reduction of 39.7% in comparison with the same period last year.
In June alone, Brazilian thermoplastic resin output totaled 380,400 tons, 6.4% more than in May. There was, however, a 6.6% reduction in comparison with June last year. Imports remained practically on the same level as in May, at 85,000 tons, and exports grew 32.2%, to reach 66,000 tons.
Despite increasing prices in the global markets, indicators are positive for growth for the remainder of the year.
