CITU, West Bengal's ruling CPM's labour arm, has called a 24-hour strike at Haldia Petrochemicals on April 8. Amicable solutions are still not ruled out by Citu, which has called the strike demanding permanent employment of 183 casual workers.
If the trade union proceeds with the April 8 strike, it will be the first such industrial action in Haldia Petro since the venture started production in 2001.
Posters and leaflets have been pasted on the Haldia Petro gate today in support of the strike. It is estimated that all 875 permanent employees and 1,500 casual workers will join the strike from 6 am on April 8 to 6 am the next day. However, the emergency boiler unit will be exempted from the strike.
