The Design Resource Centre, a hit with product designers at the last two Plastics Design and Moulding events, is back at PDM 08 next month.
PDM held in Telford, Shropshire, is a major gathering point for industrial designers in the UK. The Design Resource Centre provides the opportunity for them to touch and examine a large and diverse selection of plastics samples.
At PDM 08 the centre will show new and exciting polymeric materials, with 75 of the total 150 samples on show for the first time. Displayed on both sides of the famous materials wall of the Design Resource Centre, these samples are an important resource for designers who can take away information on each material s characteristics, performance data and manufacturer.
The Design Resource Centre is unique to PDM, said its creator Chris Lefteri, the designer, author and lecturer who communicates with the design industry about materials and how different plastics can be used for great product designs.
Lefteri added that the centre will provide visitors with even more information than before. He said: The Design Resource Centre at PDM 08 will see an extension of the meaning of resource .
It will engage with the wider idea of resources printed resources, web-based resources, manufacturing resources.
Visitors to the stand will have access to the 150 plastics samples and can take away a free publication produced by Lefteri for PDM 08.
In addition, the Design Resource Centre will include: reference books and magazines on materials for product designers; internet terminals for visitors to find out more about the samples on display; a screen showing new manufacturing technologies in action.
Lefteri argued that the use of materials is massively important in product design. He added: What s important is having information about materials and how designers use materials to create experiences, tell stories and give product branding.
There are still only a few places where designers can meet and find out about materials. There are none in plastics apart from PDM.
