MOSCOW, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Russian gas giant Gazprom will cut its gas supply to Ukraine by one fourth starting Monday, after talks on resolving gas debts ended in failure, news reports said.
Gazprom will cut down on gas supplied to Ukraine from 10 a.m. Moscow time (0700 GMT) Monday, Russia's Today TV channel reported.
"There is no new information, which means there is still no agreement between Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukrainy, the gas debt is not settled, and there is no contract on gas deliveries in 2008," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov was quoted by news agencies assaying Sunday night.
On Feb. 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yushchenko reached a deal on repayment of Ukraine's gas debt to Russia, averting a threatened cutoff in gas supplies.
Gazprom, however, has renewed its threat to cut back gas supplies, saying Ukraine has yet to ratify the agreement while continuing to consume Russian gas.
Ukraine is the main transit route for Russia's gas exports to Europe, where a quarter of its gas needs is supplied by Russia.
