28 February 2008 Azelis has added to its UK plastics distribution portfolio with the purchase of North London-based Whyte Polymers from Whyte Chemicals in a deal that takes effect on 3 March.
The deal effectively doubles Azelis Plastics UK in size, taking its turnover to the 20m area, following the earlier acquisitions of Pan Polymers and Polymers Direct (PRW.com 1 August 2006). It makes the business one of the UK's leading polymer distributors.
David Turner, business manager of Azelis Plastics UK, said: Taking over Whyte Polymers gives us a significantly stronger presence in the UK market and whilst it does not add new polymer types not already supplied by ourselves, it will give us a wider selection of suppliers and brands.
He added that this would enable the company to increase our competitiveness when selling into certain sectors. We will also gain from the expertise and experience of the additional staff members.
Melvyn Whyte, owner of Whyte Chemicals, said in a statement: Whyte Polymers no longer fits with our strategic ambitions. We have taken the decision to focus all our resources on our core business and this solution maintains our principals' route to market and provides continuity of supply for our customers who will receive expert service and support from Azelis Plastics UK.
Whyte Polymers staff will move to the new Azelis Plastics office at Thatcham, in Berkshire, from where the former Whyte Polymers business will operate under the Azelis Plastics UK name. Whyte Polymers existing warehousing facilities at Doncaster and Felixstowe will continue to be used.
The Azelis group currently comprises 36 companies and operates in 26 European countries, supplying products in food and health, pharmaceuticals, personal care, animal nutrition and coatings as well as plastics, composites and rubber.
Suppliers highlighted on the Whyte Polymers website include Sasol of South Africa for polypropylene and the joint venture in Iran between Sasol and NPV for polyolefins, as well as fast growing PET maker La Seda de Barcelona.
