Oxygen scavenging technology strengthens food containers and gives "glass-like clarity"
19 February 2008 - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an additive designed to strengthen polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers and give them glass-like clarity .
DiamondClear oxygen scavenging technology from Philadelphia-based Constar International is blended into PET to create what the company claimed was a sustainable alternative to glass packaging.
The company said its PET bottles and containers with DiamondClear can be used to package a range of shelf-stable products including: tomato ketchup, salsas, pasta sauces, barbecue and similar steak and table hot sauces, jams, jellies and juices.
It added that DiamondClear helped create monolayer structure containers that improved the look and flavour of their contents and extended their shelf life.
PET Containers with DiamondClear were, the company concluded, lighter in weight than glass, unbreakable and recyclable.
Constar s vice president of corporate technologies Donald Deubel said: We have been successful in significantly broadening the range of products that can be packaged in our DiamondClear oxygen scavenging technology. This increases the opportunities for Constar to help brand owners meet their sustainability goals.
