Norwegian oil production down

STOCKHOLM, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Norwegian oil production was somewhat lower in 2007 than the previous year, while gas production increased, according to reports reaching here from Oslo Tuesday.

A total of 237.8 million cubic meters of marketable oil equivalents were produced in 2007, 10.2 million cubic meters less than in 2006, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) said in a report.

Oil production in 2007 reached 128.5 million cubic meters compared with 136.6 million cubic meters in the previous year and about 89 billion cubic meters gas was sold in 2007, 2.0 billion cubic meters more than in 2006, the NPD added.

Total production of petroleum and gas in 2008 is expected to reach about 240 million cubic meters, of which oil production will account for 117.9 million cubic meters, slightly lower than in 2007, while gas sales will exceed 99 billion cubic meters in 2008,according to the expectation from the NPD.

Norway will shift from a major oil producer to a major gas producer if the trend continues, Oil Director of NPD Bente Nyland said.
