Cemex unit to lay off 124

Cemex Inc. plans a temporary layoff of 124 workers at its cement plant in Wampum in LawrenceCounty beginning March 19, according to the notice the company filed with the state.

The company will continue to produce cement until the layoffs begin, while stockpiling the cement for future shipping, said Jennifer Borgen, a spokeswoman at Cemex's Houston headquarters. The company is shutting down the cement production because of the drop in demand for cement, Borgen said.

Production will resume when economic conditions improve, she said.
