Sri Lanka vows to boost economic co-op with China: FM

BEIJING - Visiting Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris pledged Thursday to boost economic and trade cooperation with China.

Sri Lanka hopes to promote economic cooperation with China through mutually beneficial commercial activities, Peiris said in a speech here.

Peiris' speech, titled "Terrorism and Global Security: Lessons Learnt from Sri Lanka", was delivered at the China Institute of International Studies.

Sri Lanka appreciates China's support in constructing education and medical facilities, he said.

Sri Lanka's civil war ended in May 2009 after the the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was defeated by government troops.

Peiris is on his first official visit to China since taking office in April.

He is being accompanied by a delegation that includes information technology entrepreneurs.

He arrived in Southwest China's Sichuan province on Aug 8 for the start of his China tour. The five-day visit aslo took him to Shanghai and the Shanghai World Expo.

Peiris said more investment from Chinese entrepreneurs is welcomed in Sri Lanka.

Over 100 guests, including foreign diplomats, representatives from international organizations, as well as experts from China and other nations, attended the event where Peiris spoke.
