More than one-third of the country's exporters suffered from technical barriers in one way or another last year, China's top quality watchdog said Thursday.

Technical barriers continued to pose a major risk for Chinese exporters in 2009, causing a full-year direct loss of more than $57 billion, up by nearly $7 billion from the previous year, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

About 34 percent of the loss came from technical barriers imposed by the United States, 31 percent by the European Union, and 17 percent by Russia, the agency said.

Exports of electromechanical instruments, toys, and furniture suffered the biggest losses from technical trade barriers, it said.
