China's net external financial assets topped $1.82 trillion at the end of 2009, up 22 percent from a year ago, according to a latest statement on China's international investment position.
At the end of last year, China's external financial assets totaled $3.46 trillion, up 17 percent from a year earlier, and external financial liabilities neared $1.64 trillion, an increase of 12 percent, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said in a statement posted on its website on Tuesday.
China's reserve assets exceeded $2.45 trillion at the end of 2009, accounting for 70 percent of the external financial assets, according to the SAFE. Its foreign exchange reserves rose to nearly 2.4 trillion yuan at the end of last year.
The country's overseas direct investments hit $229.6 billion, accounting for 7 percent of the external financial assets; portfolio investments reached $242.8 billion, 7 percent; and other investments were $536.5 billion, 16 percent, the statement said.
At the end of 2009, foreign direct investments in China increased to $997.4 billion from $915.5 billion a year ago, accounting for 61 percent of the country's external financial liabilities, it said. Foreign portfolio investments reached $190 billion and other investments hit $450.8 billion.
