HK's port transshipment cargo grows 4.5%

HONG KONG - The average annual growth rate of transshipment cargo between 2004 and 2009 was 4.5 percent, the Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said on Friday.Total port cargo throughput rose to 243 million tons in 2009, from 221 million tons in 2004, representing an average annual growth rate of 1.9 percent, according to the latest issue of the HK Monthly Digest of Statistics by the department.

The share of transshipment cargo in total port cargo rose from 46.6 percent in 2004 to 52.7 percent in 2009.The port transshipment cargo movements between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland continued to take up the largest share at 41.1 percent of Hong Kong's port transshipment cargo in 2009, followed by the United States at 7.6 percent, Taiwan at 5.3 percent and Japan at 4.7 percent.Transshipment cargo movements accounted for a significant share of the port cargo movements between Hong Kong and major countries and regions of loading and discharge, with the United States at 61.4 percent, Taiwan at 57.9 percent, Japan 52.1 percent, and the Chinese mainland 51.9 percent in 2009
