Qatar Holding, wholly-owned by Qatar Petroleum and South Korea's Honam Petrochemical Corporation, has inked a heads of agreement (HoA) to develop a multi-billion dollar world-scale petrochemical complex at Mesaieed, with a capacity to produce 1.7 mln tpa of propylene, polypropylene, styrene, polystyrene and aromatics (xylene). The project, a 70:30 venture between Qatar Holding and Honam Petrochemical Corporation, is estimated to commence production towards the end 2011. The first phase of the project will comprise an ethane and naphtha cracker as well as a naphtha reformer.

The JV will be the first petrochemical complex in Qatar to use the available liquid feedstock from projects now operating in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan. The plant will use ethane and naphtha as feedstock produced by Qatar Petroleum, to produce 700,000 tons of polypropylene, 600,000 tons of styrene monomer and 220,000 tons of polystyrene in addition to significant quantities of propylene and aromatics.

UK's Foster Wheeler will provide the front-end engineering and design, process technologies would come from ABB Lummus (US) and Basell Technologies (Italy).
