Germany's Evonik Industries has broken ground for a methyl methacrylate and methacrylate specialties integrated complex in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, the specialties chemical company said.

The Eur250 million ($347 million) facility is scheduled to come on stream in mid-2009 after a two-year construction phase. It will be the second largest single chemicals investment the group has ever made.

The complex will have the capacity to produce 100,000 mt/year of MMA, methacrylic acid, butyl methacrylate, and PMMA molding compounds. The products will cater to the local optoelectronics, paint, adhesives and automobile industries.

The project will also include a thermoplastic methacrylate resins plant which is scheduled to commence operation in the second half of 2009.

Evonik has nearly 20 companies in China which produce specialty chemicals in 10 cities. Their product range include precipitated silicas, carbon black, rubber silanes, amino acids, polyurethane foam additives, coating polyesters, pigment pastes, colorants, high performance plastics and initiators used in the production of plastics. The group also has joint ventures in China which produce performance silica, fine chemicals and anodes and cathodes for lithium-ion-batteries.

Evonik's chemicals business was formerly known as Degussa.
