Methanex continues to face natural gas supply problems in Chile

Canadian methanol giant Methanex continues to operate only one of four plants at its Chilean facility at Cabo Negro as a result of limited supply of Argentine gas, the company announced in a press release Wednesday.

Natural gas shipments from Argentina have not yet been re-established, the release said.

Production from the Cabo Negro operations has been 207,000 metric tons for the period from June 11 to August 30, 2007, the company said.

Despite the production restrictions Methanex says it has continued to supply its customers from inventory, production from the company's other facilities, and with purchased product, said Methanex President and CEO Bruce Aitken.

While the company offered no immediate timeline as to when gas supplies would return to normal, it pointed to exploration and development in Chile as a potential solution to the problem.
