Total has been shortlisted as a venture partner by Algerian Sonatrach, to build a petrochemical complex in Arzew, near Oran. The investment outlay is approximated at US$3 bln. Development design will be launched shortly, with commissioning of the units scheduled in about five years.
The project includes construction of a 1.4 million metric tpa ethane cracker and three product lines- a 1.1 million metric tpa of ethylene, which will be processed into 410,000 metric tons of monoethylene glycol (MEG), 350,000 metric tons of high density polyethylene and 450,000 metric tons of linear low density polyethylene, mainly for export. The feedstock gas will be supplied from southern Algerian fields.
This project corresponds to Total's strategy of expanding its petrochemical activities through world-class facilities and securing preferred access to feedstock.
