Alberta orders Syncrude Canada to reduce H2S, ammonia emissions

The province of Alberta Tuesday ordered Syncrude Canada to minimize hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and ammonia emissions from its Mildred Lake oil sands efflunt pond in northern Alberta.

The order was issued after complaints from the public were received regarding odor emanating from the plant and after observing hydrogen sulphide alarms that indicated releases from the pond.

Alberta Environment, under the order, required Syncrude Canada to come up with an action plan by this Tuesday, September 4, to reduce hydrogen sulphide and ammonia emissions from the effluent pond.

"Syncrude must also submit a comprehensive plan on or before October 1, which details what longer-term steps it will take to reduce or eliminate hydrogen sulfide and ammonia releases," said the Alberta government release.

"I am not sure of the impact this order has on our operations at this stage," said Siren Fisekci, spokeswoman for Canadian Oil Sands Trust, the largest shareholder in the Syncrude Canada venture.
