Showa Denko plans to upgrade its ethylene facility at the Oita petrochemical complex to boost the plant's energy efficiency and cost competitiveness and lower carbon dioxide emissions. Work on the upgrade will commence in 2008 with completion estimated after the maintenance shutdown in 2010. Ethylene capacity will remain at 695,000 tpa following project completion in 2010.
Two cracking furnaces with ethylene capacity of 100,000 tpa will replace the existing seven cracking furnaces. The systems for waste heat recovery and preliminary distillation will be improved, resulting in 6% boost in energy efficiency and around 67,000 tpa reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, using naphtha feedstock.
