Lack of chemical demand keeps US MX price near blend value

Blenders in the US were looking to spend 50 cents over gasoline prices for mixed xylene on Monday, putting bids at 290 cents/gal FOB USG for December. Sellers were offering 300 cents/gal FOB USG.

"There is no chemical demand," a trading source said Monday morning. "So the price is what blenders are willing to pay."

Based on Friday's assessments, blend values were calculated early Monday from 300 to 310 cents/gal. As gasoline prices fell in early trading, blend value was estimated between 295 and 305 cents/gal.

"[The price] would have to be [300 cents/gal] or over," a producer said Monday. "If not, we would keep it and blend it ourselves."

Toluene prices were even to slightly higher than MX prices, sources said, though no firm bids or offers were heard Monday morning. Benzene also was quiet with buyers out of the market.
