Basell has signed a MOU with the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, Ltd. (NGC), and the National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago, Ltd. (NEC), confirming its intention to construct and operate a fully integrated polypropylene complex.
The MOU included the construction of a methanol plant, which will exclusively supply a methanol-to-propylene unit at the complex. The propylene produced at the complex would be the feedstock for a world-scale 450,000 tpa polypropylene plant, based on Basell's "Spherizone" technology. Start up of the project was tentatively scheduled for 2012.
The project will be undertaken in conjunction with German company Lurgi AG, the industry leader in methanol and methanol-to-propylene (MTP) technology.
