RIO DE JANEIRO-- Computer equipment stolen early this month from Brazil's state-owned energy giant Petrobras bore information about a newly discovered natural gas reserve, the local press reported Wednesday.
The stolen computer contains information about the drill NS-21 used during the exploration of a well in Jupiter field, a report said.
"There was specific intention to a particular thing," said Federal Police Superintendent Valdinho Jacinto. He added that the crime was unusual as the thieves did not take all the equipment in the container. They only took the hard disk and the laptop where the information was stored.
The container was transported from an offshore oil and gas platform to Macae, north of the capital. A gas station where the driver of the truck carrying the container spent the night is under investigation.
There were no "obvious mistakes" during the equipment transportation, said Petrobras' CEO Jose Sergio Gabrielli Tuesday.
The company discovered a large natural gas and condensate field in the Jupiter field in offshore Santos Basin's pre-salt layer last month. The block is expected to produce 30 million cubic meters of natural gas per day.
