LONDON -- The price of fuel at British pumps rose by record margins in the last month, with average fuel prices up by 5.61 pence (10.95 U.S. cents) per liter in the past month, while diesel shot up 7.39 pence (14.42 cents), leading automobile service network AA said Wednesday.
The average cost of petrol in Britain between mid-May and mid-June has touched 118.16 pence (230.55 cents) per liter, while diesel stands at 131.56 pence (256.7 cents) per liter, according to AA.
Despite four days of strike action by tanker drivers, the areas worse hit by fuel shortages failed to show any significant price premium, Sky News said.
"These record prices are affecting the mobility and livelihood of many motorists," said Edmund King, president of the AA.
The AA called on the government to abandon any prospect of a 2 pence (3.9 cent) per liter increase, set up a fuel regulator and consider other measures to help low-income motorists.
Hundreds of drivers who supplied Shell forecourts went on strike for four days, leading to fuel shortages at garages across the country.
