ABUJA - Royal Dutch Shell said on Monday six Nigerian contract workers died last week after an oil pipeline fire in the Niger Delta.
The accident occurred on Thursday while the workers were repairing the Shell-operated Amukpe pipeline in Delta state in southern Nigeria.
"The fire has been extinguished and we are conducting an investigation into the matter," said spokesman Precious Okolobo, adding that the pipeline has been shutdown.
More than a fifth of the OPEC member's oil production has been shutdown since early 2006, mainly due to militant attacks and sabotage from armed gangs.
