Nigeria Bonny oil output back up near 200,000 bpd

ABUJA, March 5 - Output at Nigeria's Bonny Light crude terminal, operated by Royal Dutch Shell has ramped up to around 200,000 barrels per day, a senior official of state-run NNPC said on Thursday.

Production was cut to around 90,000 bpd three weeks ago because of security concerns in the Niger Delta, the heart of Nigeria's oil and gas sector.

"As of Monday, it's producing around 200,000 bpd," the NNPC official said. Bonny production has averaged around 200,000 bpd over the last year or so.

Shell last month warned that unrest in the delta meant it may be unable to meet some oil export obligations from its Bonny terminal for most of February and some of March.

Production of Bonny Light, a light crude oil popular with U.S. and European refiners, has fallen sharply in the last few years since militants began a campaign of violence against the oil industry.

An NNPC official last month said the Bonny terminal was producing more than 500,000 bpd before the attacks started in early 2006. A fifth of the country's output has been shut down since then.
