TOKYO, March 25 - Tokyo Gas Co, Japan's biggest city gas supplier, said on Wednesday it planned to buy 12.333 billion cubic metres of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the year from April 1, compared with an estimated 13.109 billion cubic metres in the year ending this month.
The company said in a report on its supply programme for the year starting in April that the economic crisis would have a significant impact on energy demand in the short-term.
But it anticipated a modest recovery for the year starting in April 2010, when it expects its LNG buying to come to 12.695 billion cubic metres. Last March, the company had projected it would buy 13.509 billion cubic metres of LNG in 2009/10.
The company also said it expected to consume 9.693 million tonnes of LNG and 266,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 2009/10, compared with an estimated 10.198 million tonnes of LNG and 273,000 tonnes of LPG in 2008/09 ending this month.
Tokyo Gas, which supplies natural gas in Tokyo and the surrounding region, expects the industrial sector to shift to more environmentally friendly natural gas from coal or fuel oil in the long term.
