More delays seen for Rockies Express East gas line

NEW YORK, April 23 - Initial service into Illinois on part of the huge Rockies Express natural gas pipeline remains slated for mid-May, but some service into Indiana will be delayed until late May due to weather-related problems, including Wabash River flooding, a company website said Thursday.

"Based on the fact that the Wabash River has remained above flood stage since early April, Rockies Express now projects it will initially commence REX East service to the four delivery points in Illinois upstream of the Wabash. We anticipate service to the NGPL, Ameren, Trunkline and Midwestern delivery points in Illinois to commence in mid-May with the addition of the PEPL delivery point in Putnam County, Indiana, in late May," the posting said.

Rockies Express affirmed its previously projected in-service dates of June 15 for Lebanon, Ohio, and Nov. 1 for Clarington, Ohio.

In November, joint owner Sempra Energy (SRE.N) said project costs had ballooned to $6 billion from earlier estimates of $4.4 billion, due to rising labor and permitting costs on the eastern leg of the line.

The 1,679-mile pipeline is one of the largest gas pipelines in North America. When complete, it will deliver about 1.8 billion cubic feet per day of gas from Rio Blanco County in Colorado to Monroe County in Ohio.

The pipeline is a joint venture of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (KMP.N), Sempra unit Sempra Pipelines and Storage, and ConocoPhillips (COP.N).
