Melea s gas moulding patents up for sale

May 14-The liquidator of Gibraltar-based Melea which owned the gas-assisted moulding patents marketed by Gain Technologies of the US has appointed UK-based Amco Agency to sell the company s IP portfolio.

Grant Thornton (Gibraltar) was appointed liquidator and receiver for Melea by the Gibraltar Supreme Court in November last year after UK-based Cinpres Gas Injection petitioned for a winding up order.

London-based Amco Agency is a commercial valuation operation that specialises in intangible asset and IP valuation.

Our engagement is designed to ensure that all interested parties are considered before any transfer of assets is made, said Michael Charles, who is handling the Melea IP sale at the company.

Cinpres was owed money by Melea following a UK Court of Appeal decision in January 2008, which granted the UK company ownership of a Melea patent (UK0424435) relating to so-called overspill moulding.

Melea and Cinpres had been involved in a series of patent disputes dating back more than two decades.

While the value of the Melea portfolio is unclear, Cinpres director Jon Butler indicated that the company was interested in acquiring it.

Our view is that there is significant value in the remaining IP. It s granted and it s unchallenged, said Butler. We have had ongoing discussions with the liquidator as the major creditor.

However, many of the key patents relating to gas moulding are now either expired or are close to expiry. The UK patent that Cinpres gained ownership of from Melea in 2008 expired later that year.

In February this year another key patent related to overspill gas injection moulding (EP0393315), which was filed in 1989 by Christoph Jaroschek on behalf of Kl ckner Ferromatik and which Melea held licensing rights for, also expired.

Overspill moulding is one of the most common techniques for using gas to core out thick sectioned plastics injection mouldings.
