Apple Inc. on Wednesday announced that Ronald Sugar, former chief executive officer (CEO) of Northrop Grumman, has joined its board of directors.

Sugar served as chairman and CEO at Northrop Grumman from 2003 until his retirement in 2010 from the aerospace and defense technology company, a major U.S. defense contractor.

"Ron is an engineer at heart, who then became a very successful business leader. We are very excited to welcome him to Apple's Board," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a press release, adding that Sugar "has been involved in the development of some very sophisticated technology."

"I have always had enormous admiration for the people of Apple, " the Apple press release quoted Sugar as saying. "It is a special privilege to serve on the board of such an amazing company."

In addition to Jobs and Sugar, Apple's current board members also include former U.S. vice president Al Gore, former Intuit CEO Bill Campbell, J. Crew CEO Millard Drexler, Avon Products CEO Andrea Jung and Genentech chairman Arthur Levinson.
