Autodesk Inc plans to expand sales of 2D and 3D design software in China in core industries including construction, manufacturing and media sectors and banks on its biggest single research center in Shanghai to develop products tailored for the Chinese market as well as globally, the United States-based firm said yesterday in Beijing.
The world's top software vendor also plans to charge iPad and iPhone users of its flagship software, Autocad, which is free now. It says it will add extra functions "over time" for ordinary users, not just designers, of the software.
"There are huge new residential property, high-speed railway networks, 3D digital cinemas and engineering projects here. That's the huge opportunity for us," said Patrick Williams, Autodesk's Asia Pacific president.
The firm aims to develop more applications for iPad and iPhone and some of them will be paid apps, said Hanspal. Half a million people have downloaded Autodesk's AutoCAD WS onto iPhones and iPads since the app debuted online six weeks ago.
Its R&D center in Shanghai is also the world's biggest, developing "everything for us" for the local and overseas markets, Hanspal said.
