Saudi Arabia's petrochemical giant SABIC has officially opened a new polyolefin logistics centre at Cleveland in northeast England, replacing its previous logistics centre in the UK to "reinforce the company's long-term commitment to serving its UK customers," the company said Tuesday.

"The centre's fully scaleable design will ensure that SABIC is equipped to meet current and future market demand for all the products in its broad polyolefin portfolio, which includes linear low density polyethylene film, high density polyethylene and polypropylene," the company said.

The centre is operated by Swiss logistics and transport company, Bertschi.

"This is a major step for our company in developing a network of pan-European polymer handling facilities. We are very proud to operate this new infrastructure on behalf of SABIC, with whom we have a long standing, excellent business partnership, including in developing innovative logistics solutions," said Hans-Joerg Bertschi, President and CEO of Bertschi group.

The new logistics centre is expected to enable SABIC to support the growing use of bulk polymer handling operations that eliminate the need for manual interventions, such as "ripping and tipping", the company said.

SABIC also operates a 400,000 mt/year low density polyethylene plant at Wilton in northeast England.
