Domestic electronic-reader producers are refocusing their sights on the hot tablet PC market and its huge commercial potential this year, analyst said Tuesday.
Some e-readers producers will be forced to withdraw from the market mainly because of serious price wars between rivals, according to a report filed Tuesday with Analysys International, an Internet based consultancy.
"The increase (sales) rate for the electronic reader market in 2011 will be lower than the pre-vious year, partly due to the lack of punishment for content piracy," Sun Peilin, an analyst with Analysys International, told the Global Times Tuesday.
Domestic sales volume for tablet PCs this year is expected to total 4.5 million, according to the consultancy.
"In 2011, we will promote our tablet PC, the HPad, as well as our traditional e-readers, simul-taneously," Wang Bangjiang, vice president with Hanvon Technology Co, the country's biggest e-book reader manufacturer, told the Global Times Tuesday.
"We are inspired by Apple's iPad, and our tablet PCs will cater to domestic consumers' demands," Wang said, adding that affluent reading contents including books, magazines and newspaper that Hanvon owned could be applied on the HPad.
Hanvon was not the only company that already have taken actual actions in tablet PCs area.
"We will focus on tablet PCs this year, and e-readers are just our transitional products," Feng Jun, president with Beijing Huaqi Information Digital Technology Co, told the Global Times Tuesday.
Huaqi is a domestic high-tech company with digital products ranging from MP4s and digital cameras to e-readers.
"Apple's iPad cultivated huge domestic demand for tablet PCs, which also brought busi-ness opportunities for domestic companies," Feng said.
He added that among his company's over 100 different types of products, Huaqi's aigoPad, its tablet PC, is expected to be one of its primary products in the future.
A Huaqi aigoPad N700ES 8G retails for around 3,999 yuan ($605.15), while an E700 aigoPad 8G goes for 1,999 yuan ($302.50), much cheaper than the price of an Apple iPad sold in the domestic market.
Analysys' Sun said "Consumers not only care about the size and color of the device, they also demand a wide selection of content and software (choices)."
