Dell to Buy Information Security Firm SecureWorks

Write: Ewan [2011-05-20]
Dell Inc. on Tuesday announced that it has agreed to buy SecureWorks, a provider of information security services.

SecureWorks, headquartered in Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia, delivers security services to clients over the Internet. Founded in 1999, the company now has over 2,900 clients worldwide.

"SecureWorks is a recognized industry leader in information security services and its offerings and expertise will immediately enhance our solutions portfolio," Peter Altabef, president of Dell Services, said in a statement.

Dell expects the transaction to close in early 2011, saying that it plans to maintain SecureWorks' current operations. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The deal is the latest indication of how information technology giants are strengthening their security offerings, as the demand for security is increasing with more and more businesses moving data and processes online.

In August 2010, computer chipmaker Intel Corp. announced its intent to acquire network security vendor McAfee Inc. for 7.68 billion U.S. dollars, the largest transaction of its kind in the security field.

Hewlett-Packard Co.(HP), Dell's bigger rival, last year also bought security-software maker ArcSight for about 1.5 billion dollars.
