South Korea's two largest automakers, Hyundai and its affiliate, Kia, are now aiming to increase their global sales by 10 percent this year with a focus on boosting quality and developing new models.

The carmakers are targeting combined sales of 6.3 million vehicles. They sold an estimated 5.7 million units combined last year.

Hyundai and Kia have boosted their global sales on demand for new models including Hyundai's Sonata midsize sedan and Kia's Sorento sport-utility vehicle.

The Seoul-based carmakers also benefited as Japanese rivals were hampered by a strong yen and Toyota struggled to rebuild its reputation after record vehicle recalls.

Hyundai is constructing a third plant in China to boost its annual production capacity in the market by 400,000 vehicles to 1 million in two years.
