Wall Street headed up in early trading on Friday despite mixed jobless data.
The Labor Department said employers added 103,000 jobs in December, an improvement from November but far below most analysts' expectations.
The nation's unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent last month, its lowest level in 19 months. That was because more people found jobs, but also because some people gave up on their job searches.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 9.24 points, or 0.08 percent, to 11,706.55. The Standard & Poor's 500 index increased 1.65 points, or 0.13 percent, to 1,275.50 and the Nasdaq climbed 3.27 points, or 0.12 percent, to 2,713.16.
