The Port of Shuangyu, located near Liuheng Island in Zhoushan City, was said to be the greatest and the most prosperous international free port in Asia in the mid-16th century. For a long time, such matters as the location of the Port of Shuangyu and the amount of trade done there have remained key research areas in the field of archaeology. On December 13th, the Society for Historical and Cultural Research on Shuangyu Port was founded in Zhoushan City with the hope of uncovering many of the historical mysteries. The founding of the Society may help not only reveal the rich history of the Port of Zhoushan but also provide theoretical support for the construction of the National-level Experimental Zone for Comprehensive Marine Development in Zhoushan.
