US-Viet Nam trade hits $18.3b

US-Vietnamese bilateral trade reached a record of nearly US$18.3 billion in value in 2010, up 19 per cent on 2009.
The figure included over $14.78 billion worth of US imports from Viet Nam which reflected a 20 per cent rise over 2009, according to data released by the US Department of Commerce.
The majority of the US's import value went to Viet Nam's apparel and clothing accessories ($5.76 billion), furniture ($1.82 billion) and footwear ($1.62 billion).
The country imported $646.4 million worth of Vietnamese seafood, posting a year-on-year surge of 23.8 per cent and its purchase of machinery and mechanical appliances and parts expanded by 53 per cent to hit $621 million.
Exports from the US to Viet Nam amounted to over $3.5 billion, and there was a rise of 29 per cent in machinery and mechanical appliances and parts, and surges of 207 per cent in oil seed and natural honey and 159 per cent in raw hides and leather.
However, the US saw a decrease of 31.5 per cent in its sales of vehicles to Viet Nam, from $441.7 million in 2009 to $302.3 million in 2010.
According to the US International Trade Commission, Viet Nam ranked 27th among the US's 221 export partners.
