Decide on the target market for your shoes and determine whether you will create them for women, men or children. Choose the type of shoes you will make by selecting the function or purpose of the shoes. Decide whether they will be casual, formal, sports shoes, sandals or another design. Choose the name or brand of your shoes and determine the budget you will use to start your own retail shoe business.
Step 2
Decide on the number of shoes you want to sell and budget accordingly. Secure the materials for making your shoes. You'll need to do quite a bit of research to ensure you buy material of high quality at a competitive price. Examples of materials you may need include leather, rubber and canvas.
Step 3
Design your shoes by drawing or sketching them on paper or by using footwear design software that is compatible with your software design skills.
Step 4
Use an industry standard size chart to determine the correct sizes of the shoes you will make. Have a workspace and work table to construct the shoes.
Step 5
Research and find shoe factories and manufacturers and choose one that suits your needs and budget to create a product sample of your shoes. Get a product sample made.
Step 6
Contact the factory or manufacturer of your preference and get your samples made. The majority of shoe factories and manufacturers are located in China, Italy and Portugal.
Step 7
Review your samples and ensure they meet your design and quality standards. Proceed to sign a contract with the manufacturer or factory to make a complete line of your shoes for retail sales.
Step 8
Quality check each item you will sell to ensure they are all well made with no flaws. Package your shoes, label them to ensure they are ready for sale. You can use shoe boxes or bags to sell to retail customers.
Step 9
To sell your shoes to a retail market, sell them online or approach local boutique owners to place your shoes for sale in their shop. The owners may wish to buy your shoes outright or put accept them on consignment.
To sell online; open an online storefront website or place your handmade shoes for sale on sites like Etsy or Sense of Fashion to reach retail customers. Get a website designer to create an interactive online site with e-commerce capabilities to sell your shoes on the Internet.
Step 11
Sell your shoes to retail stores by attending trade fairs such as the New York Shoe Expo and the World Shoes and Accessories Show. Trade shows offer exposure and access to national and international retail store buyers.
